Every living organism is unique. No two are exactly alike. All through the organic world, there are great differences among individuals of the same species. Modern psychology teaches that no two human beings are alike.
They differ in age, size, health, sex, knowledge, ability, intelligence, etc. These differences are due to the factors like heredity, physical health and physique and the environmental factors.
People differ in levels of intelligence. They are categorized into different categories on the basis of one’s IQ. One can be classified to fall in anyone of the idiot through genius categories.
The intelligence level of individual greatly determines his behaviour, learning, thinking, memory, etc. It is important for the nurse to realize these facts in order to deal effectively with patients.
Understanding the instructions given by the nurses and doctors depends upon the intelligence levels of these patients.
The dullards may not understand the instructions of the nurses and the importance of treatment; whereas the average and high average patient can understand and follow easily.
The mentally retarded and below average patients need special training and instructions. Hence it is important for a nurse to have a clear idea of these individual differences.

Intelligence tests are useful in many ways. Important among them are:

c. To take necessary steps and adopt appropriate methods of teaching mentally retarded, below average and gifted children.
